Teleworking refers to a working arrangement or style of work where an employee does their work outside the office or outside the main office. Usually they work at home one or more days a week and communicate with the office by phone or other Internet-based form such as chat or email.

This type of flexible work organization may also include some other non-traditional work settings, such as flexible hours, although this is not necessarily the case for all remote work assignments.

Remote work generally refers to a state of work in which a person regularly is behind off site, but sometimes it is also used as a temporary term, such as when someone will be working from home on weekends or while on vacation.

However, it is not usually a term used for situations where employees occasionally take work home with them, or where employees’ work involves a large amount of off-site work or travel (such as sales).

Other Names for Telecommuting

  • Software Engineer

Fraud at home

It is very common to see advertisements or even official job offers that claim to be remote jobs but are actually just a scam.

Sometimes these are «get rich quick» schemes, which may indicate that after the initial investment, they may return the money to you or get more money later. Others may suggest that once you buy their product, you can use it to handle work from home and get reimbursed later.

According to the FTC : “If a business opportunity promises no risk, little effort, and big rewards, it’s almost certainly a scam. These scams only offer a money hole where, no matter how much time and money is invested, consumers will never achieve the promised wealth and financial freedom.”

It is better to look for home based, telecommuting jobs from reputable sources such as through the company itself and not in third-party workplaces.
