Is your home being attacked by porch pirates? Maybe it’s time to fight back. Luckily, you can secure your packages with a few simple steps, from proper shipping instructions to home delivery options.

Use Shipping Instructions

Shipping instructions can make a big difference. If your packages were stolen because they were left on your lawn or driveway, then solving the problem of having packages delivered to your front door can solve your problem. You can even ask to leave the bags somewhere else, such as at the back door. You can also require packages to be signed upon delivery so packages are never left outside.

You can also use services like Amazon Day to schedule deliveries on specific days, such as non-working days. Of course, the Amazon Day feature only makes sense when ordering through Amazon. If your package is shipped via UPS , FedEx or USPS , you can schedule your delivery through their package tracking menu. Simply click the tracking number in your delivery confirmation email and select the day you would like your package to be delivered.

Install a security camera

Security cameras have come a long way. With the advent of cloud storage and high-speed internet, you can easily access live camera feeds or recordings from your phone. Plus, popular smart security cameras like the Arlo Pro or Ring Video Doorbell are surprisingly affordable so you don’t have to break the bank to keep your packages safe.

Smart security cameras are relatively affordable and easy to use, but at the end of the day, security cameras work best when they keep or completely stop thieves’ packages. Video footage of the crime is great, but would you like to get your mail? Try to make the existence of your security camera as obvious as possible. You can even use a cheap fake security camera to scare off thieves.

Deliver packages to work or a friend’s house

One of the easiest ways to keep your packages safe is to have them delivered to work. Just make sure your full name and phone number are on the shipping label and try adding additional information like office or department numbers. Also, be aware that some companies are not very good at distributing mail. Try putting a small package to work before jeopardizing an expensive purchase.

In addition, you can receive a package at a friend’s house. Pick a friend with a short cut or a history of successful deliveries, or ask around and see if your friends have a mailbox to share.

Pick up package from locker or delivery center

You don’t have to pay for a mailbox to get secure remote delivery. You can get your Amazon packages straight to Amazon Locker for free during checkout, as long as you are a prime customer. As soon as your package arrives, you will receive a temporary pin code for quick, 24/7 access. These lockers are located all over the country, and there is probably one near your house.

Of course, you can only use Amazon Locker for Amazon packages. Alternatively, you can ask USPS, UPS, or FedEx to hold your package at a delivery center for up to five days. Click the tracking number in the delivery confirmation email and select the Hold My Package option (sometimes this option will be hidden in the Change My Shipping Location menu).

Use an Amazon key for home or car delivery

Amazon Key is a weird idea, but it’s an easy way to make sure none of your packages go missing. At its most basic level, Amazon Key is just software that pairs with a smart lock and a smart security camera. It allows you to quickly lock and unlock your door using a key code, Alexa voice commands, or scheduled treatments. Every time the door is opened, Amazon Key sends you notifications and records a short video.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, you can give delivery drivers temporary access to your home through the Amazon Key system. Your parcels reach your home, even if you are at work. Sure, it sounds suspicious, but Amazon Key keeps a record of every delivery, and Amazon employees don’t really have a reason to snoop in your home when they know they’re being watched.

For added peace of mind, you can use Amazon Key exclusively for your garage or car. This way, no one will go straight into your living room to drop packages.
