The Sony Remote Play feature allows PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 owners to share their console’s screen on another device, such as the PlayStation Vita or PlayStation Portable (PSP) . This means you can play games, watch movies, and play music without being tied to your TV screen. In this guide, we will show you how to use Remote Play on PS3 and PSP.

This guide applies especially to PS3 firmware 1.80 and above, together with PSP firmware 3.72 or above.

What You Need for Remote Play on PS3 and PSP

To use Remote Play on PS3 and PSP, you need the following software and hardware:

  • PSP with firmware 3.72 or higher.
  • PS3 with firmware 1.80 or higher.
  • mini-B USB cable.
  • Internet connection (if you are connecting via the Internet and not via a wireless network).
  • PlayStation Network account (if you connect via the Internet).

How to set up PS3 Remote Play on PSP

Here’s how to get PS3 Remote Play to work on your PSP controller:

There is content on PS3 that you won’t be able to access through PSP. Movies downloaded to PS3 from PlayStation Network will not play and most PS3 games will also not work. You can access your own videos and music, as well as PSOne Classics games (either on a disc in your PS3 tray or on your HD hard drive).

  1. First, you need connect PSP with PS3. Connect PSP to PS3 with USB cable and select USB connection in menu » Settings» on PSP.

    You can use the USB cable from your wireless controller to connect your PSP to PS3.

  2. On PS3, go to the Settings menu and select » Remote Play Settings» > » Register device» . Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the pairing process. Once you see the «Registration Completed» message, your PSP and PS3 will be paired and you can unplug the USB cable.

  3. To use remote play locally (with your PSP within range of your PS3’s WiFi), go to menu network on PS3 and select remote play . Ignore the PS3 login message (this is for internet connection). To use Internet Remote Play, proceed to Step Six.

  4. Switch to PSP, go to menu » Net» and select » Remote Play» . Select Connect via private network . If you’ve already put your PS3 into Remote Play mode (which you did if you followed the steps above), ignore the prompt that appears and select OK . Select PlayStation 3 from the menu.

  5. After some connection screens display PSP will change to a mini XMB version of your PS3 (or home menu). Your PS3 displays a «Remote Play in Progress» message. You are now browsing PS3 through PSP.

  6. To use Remote Play over the Internet, first sign in to your PlayStation Network account on your PS3. Then go to menu » Net» and select » Remote Play» on PS3.

  7. Go to menu » Net» on your PSP and select » Remote Play» . Then select Connect via the Internet . You will be prompted to sign in to your PlayStation Network account on PS3, which you have already done by following the steps above, so select OK .

    The PlayStation Network account is free. If you need it just choose PlayStation Network in menu » Net» on PS3 and follow the on-screen instructions.

  8. A list of network connections is displayed on your PSP. Select the one you use to connect your PSP to the Internet.

    Don’t choose PlayStation 3.

    You will be prompted to sign in to PlayStation Network. Remember to sign in with the same account you used for PS3.

  9. Your PSP should load and display a mini version of your PS3 XMB (home menu). Your PS3 should display a «Remote Play in Progress» message. You are now accessing the PS3 through the PSP.

  10. When you’re ready to disconnect from Remote Play, press the Home button on your PSP and select » Exit Remote Play» . Turn off your PS3 by pressing the circular button on your controller.
