If you’re going on vacation soon and don’t want to worry about changing the thermostat as you’re trying to bankrupt the family, Ecobee actually lets you schedule the thermostat to go into away mode in advance.

Setting an ecobee to rest is essentially just putting it into «away» mode, which lowers the temperature settings so your heating or air conditioning doesn’t run as often when you’re out and about. Here’s how to do it.
Start by opening the Ecobee app on your smartphone and pressing the menu button on the bottom left corner of the screen.
Click on Vacation.
Click on the round «+» button in the upper right corner of the screen.
From there, first tap on «Date and Time of Departure».
Click on Departure Date.
Select the day you will leave and click «Save» at the bottom.
Then click «Departure Time» and select the approximate time you will be leaving. You can only choose half-hour increments, so it doesn’t have to be exact or anything. Click «Save» at the bottom when you’re done.
After that, click on the back arrow in the upper left corner of the screen and select Return date and time.
On the next screen, click Return Date.
Select the day you will return home and click «Save» at the bottom.
Then click «Return Time» and select an approximate return time. Again, you can only choose half-hour increments, so this doesn’t have to be exact. Click «Save» at the bottom when you’re done.
Once this is done, click on the back arrow in the top left corner of the screen and then click on Vacation Settings.
If it’s hot outside, turn on «Cool» and turn off «Heat». Do the opposite in winter.
Where it says «Minimum fan run time» you can select the amount of time per hour the fan should run. Otherwise, the fan will only operate when the HVAC system is turned on. It’s great if you know that the air conditioner or heater might not turn on many times (or not at all) while you’re away, so at least with the fan running, the air won’t get stale.
When you’re done, click the back arrow in the top left corner of the screen.
Click «Save» at the bottom right corner.
Once you click Save, your vacation settings will be displayed with your departure date on the screen.
You can click on it to change any settings you want. Otherwise, you’re all set and your Ecobee thermostat will automatically go into holiday mode at the time and date you specified.
