Required time : Restoring deleted files from the Recycle Bin in Windows should only take a few minutes, but it mainly depends on how quickly you can find the files you want to recover, as well as their size.

  1. Open the Recycle Bin by double-clicking or double-clicking its desktop icon.

The Recycle Bin does not display files contained in deleted folders. Keep this in mind if you can’t find a file you know you deleted — it might be in folder, which you deleted. Restoring a folder will, of course, restore all the files it contains. To see what files are in a deleted folder before restoring it, see Steps command line below.

There is no way in Windows to recover files that have been deleted by emptying the Recycle Bin. If you have indeed deleted the file in Windows, file recovery program can help you reestablish his. look, How to Recover Deleted Files for a beginner to end tutorial on how to solve this problem.

Another way to restore the selection is to drag it from window baskets to a folder of your choice. This will force the file to be restored wherever you choose.

If you use the Restore option (and don’t drag and drop), all files will be restored to their respective locations. In other words, you can restore all files at the same time, but this does not mean that they will be moved to the same folder, unless, of course, they were deleted from the same folder.

  5. Wait while Recycle Bin recovers deleted files.

The time it takes to do this depends mostly on how many files you are restoring and how big they are, but the speed of your computer is also a factor here.

  6. Make sure the files and folders you restored are in the location(s) shown to you in step 3, or that they are located where you dragged them in step 4.

  7. Now you can exit baskets, if you have completed the restore.

How to recover a specific file from a deleted folder

  1. Open Command Prompt . One quick way to do this is to launch the Run dialog with WIN+R and then enter cmd .

If you get an error, go back to step 2 and try another team, for example:

    CD Recycler

Unfortunately, the exact command differs between different versions of Windows.

All deleted files are listed in the command prompt window. If there are any folders in the Recycle Bin, those files (and the original filenames) are also displayed.

  5. Find the folder name.

On the command line, the folder name does not match what is displayed in the recycle bin. Folders have «

‘ in the list to the left of the folder name.

To find the correct folder, scroll through the command prompt until you see a list of files that you suspect are in the folder you want to restore. You will see the folder name at the top of this section, next to string «Directory of» .

  6. Enter cd make a space, and then again and again press key tab, to cycle through all the folders in the trash.

The point here is to find the one that lists the directory you defined in step 5. In our example (see screenshot below), the directory ends with «1002» (the topmost section), so we’ll be pressing the key Tab until Find it.

This is where you open a specific folder in the trash that contains the actual folder you want to access. In other words, the deleted folder that you will eventually see after a few steps is actually a subfolder in the Recycle Bin, you just don’t notice it in the Recycle Bin folder.

  12. Click Enter .

The command completed successfully, if you see the message » <#> file(s) copied «).

How to show or «show» program/trash icon

Basket not must sit on your Windows desktop all the time. While it is certainly an integrated part of the Windows operating system and therefore cannot be removed, it can be hidden.

You, or perhaps your computer manufacturer, may have done this to make the desktop a bit cleaner. It’s fine that it isn’t, but of course it makes it hard to use.

Here’s how to show the cart again if it’s hidden:

If you don’t see neither one icon on the desktop, you need to include all the icons on Desktop. Do this by right clicking on the desktop and going to menu » View» > » Show desktop icons» .

Windows 10

Open » Desktop Icon Settings » through » Settings» > » Personalization» > » Topics», and then » Desktop Icon Settings » (located under » Related Settings » ). Check basket, and then click or click OK .

Windows 8

Open Control Panel and do search to show or hide common desktop icons . Click on this link in the results and select » Basket» and then tap or click » OK» .

Windows 7 and Vista

Right-click anywhere on the desktop and select » Personalization» . Click Change icons on the desktop left. Check basket and press the button OK .

Windows XP

Windows XP does not have a built-in ability to hide the Recycle Bin, but it is possible with a program called Tweak UI . If you’re using Windows XP but can’t see the Recycle Bin, it’s probably because this program was used to hide it, which you can also use to «reveal» it.

If you prefer the Recycle Bin to be off the desktop, another way to access it is to find basket through Cortana (Windows 10) or the search bar (in most other versions of Windows), and then open the program when it appears. in the list of results.

You can also start the cart by doing command start shell: RecycleBinFolder from the command line or shell: RecycleBinFolder from the Run dialog, but these methods are probably only useful in the rarest of cases. Works on some versions of Windows desk.cpl, 5 .

How to Stop Windows from Instantly Deleting Files

If you find yourself recovering deleted files from the Recycle Bin more often than you probably should, chances are your computer is configured to not ask for confirmation when deleting files.

For example, if you delete a file on Windows 10 and it immediately goes to the trash without asking you if you really want to delete it, then you can change it so that you have the option to say » Not», if you accidentally deleted a file or folder.

Screenshot showing the option to display delete messages for the Windows 10 Recycle Bin

Ability to display a delete confirmation dialog (Windows 10).

To do this, right-click or long-press the trash can icon and select » Properties» . If there is an option called Display deletion confirmation dialog make sure it has a checkbox in that box to ask you if you’re sure you want to delete any files and folders you delete.

If Windows deletes files instantly even with the confirmation dialog box enabled, check the other option just above it. When you enable the » Don’t move files to trash» files completely bypass the trash. This means you never need to empty it to clear up disk space, but it also means you can’t restore anything from the Recycle Bin if you change your mind about keeping it.

You may also take note setting custom size in the cart properties to make sure it’s not too small. If so, then Windows will «permanently» delete files if there is no space in the Recycle Bin.
