Now that Samsung has released the Galaxy Note 10 and 10 Plus, you’ll find that the traditional way to turn off phones doesn’t work. Instead, you must use a new keyboard shortcut or change its default settings. Here’s how.
Shutdown with physical buttons
On almost any other Android smartphone or tablet, you can turn off the device by pressing and holding the power button. Typically, this action launches the power menu, which allows you to turn off the phone, restart it, or perform other actions. The new Bixby virtual assistant opens on Samsung’s new flagships.
With the Galaxy Note 10 and 10 Plus, Samsung has added a new keyboard shortcut to launch the power menu. Instead of just pressing and holding the Power button (which Samsung calls «Side Key»), you need to press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time for a few seconds.
You can release both bases when the power menu appears on the screen. Now all you need to do is click Power Off and your Samsung Galaxy Note 10 or 10 Plus will turn off.
Change side button press and hold action
As mentioned above, Samsung allows you to change the default behavior when you long press the power button. Here’s how you can change it if you’d rather jump straight to the power menu instead of launching Bixby.
First, swipe down from the top of the screen to display the notification shade. Then click on the gear icon in the top right corner to open the Settings menu.
Now click «Advanced Features». The element must be in the middle of the parameter list.
Select Side Key.
Now you can change the default behavior of double-clicking the power button, as well as what happens when you press and hold the button. You can select «Power off menu» under «Press and hold».
Alternatively, you can access the side button menu by swiping down the notification shade, pressing the power icon, and selecting «Side key settings». You can then choose «Shutdown Menu» as the press-and-hold action.
Shutdown from the quick settings panel
If you don’t want or can’t use the Galaxy Note 10 or 10 Plus’s physical buttons to turn off your phone, Samsung has inserted a shortcut to the power menu in the notification shade.
To access it, swipe down from the top of your phone screen to pull down the notification shade. From there, click on the power icon in the top right corner next to the gear button.
The food menu will now load, offering several options to choose from. Click Power Off to turn off the device.
Shutdown with Bixby
The last option is to ask Samsung’s virtual assistant Bixby to turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 10 or 10 Plus.
To get started, you need to launch Bixby. If you haven’t changed the default power button long press behavior, you can do so to bring up the assistant. From there, say «Turn off your phone» and your handset should be off.
You can also access the virtual assistant through Bixby Home by swiping to the rightmost home screen. Here you can click on the Bixby icon and then tell it to turn off your phone.

Turn your Note 10 or 10 Plus back on
Luckily, Samsung hasn’t changed the way the Galaxy Note 10 or 10 Plus turns on. As with all other smartphones, all you have to do is press and hold the power button for a few seconds. You can release when the Samsung logo appears on the screen.
