disk utility Mac is a multifunctional, easy-to-use tool for working with hard drives and disk images. Among other things, Disk Utility can erase, format, repair, and partition hard drives. Here is a quick overview of using Disk Utility to quickly and easily partition your Mac hard drive.

The information in this article applies to Disk Utility on a Mac running OS X Yosemite and El Capitan as well as macOS Sierra High Sierra, Mojave and Catalina .

Use Disk Utility to partition your Mac hard drive

Disk Utility allows you to partition your hard drive into multiple partitions. Each partition can be formatted or left unformatted as free space for future use. The process differs with different iterations of the Disk Utility app in different versions of OS X and macOS.

Before you begin, back up your data in case something goes wrong and delete files and apps that you don’t need to free up as much space as possible.

Disk Utility Partition in OS X Yosemite

  1. Go to Applications > Utilities and double click disk utility, to open the application.

  2. Select main hard drive your car on the left panel.

  3. Select tab » Separation » in the top menu next to point «First aid» .

  4. In chapter » Location» select plus sign (+).

  5. Decide what size you want the new partition to be. Choose to split the selected partition into two partitions or create a partition from unallocated disk space. Drag the bar to resize the section, or use field » The size» to enter the size.

  6. Enter a name for your new section.

  7. Use drop-down menu Format, to select the format for this section. default format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is a good choice for most applications.

  8. Select Apply .

  9. Disk Utility will display a confirmation sheet with instructions on how to proceed. Select chapter, to continue.

  10. In a few seconds, your new partition will appear on your drive and be ready to use.

Disk Utility Partition in OS X El Capitan

Disk Utility has been transformed into El Capitan, so even though it functions the same way, some processes look different. For example, Disk Utility in El Capitan uses a pie chart to represent disk partitions.

  1. Go to Applications > Utilities and double click disk utility, to open the app.

  2. Select disk, which you want to split on the left pane.

  3. Select chapter in the top menu next to paragraphs «First aid» » Erase» » Mount» and » Information» .

  4. Select plus sign (+) to add a new section and use the pie chart to resize it. Or enter the size in field » The size» .

  5. Enter a name for the new section.

  6. Use drop-down menu Format, to select the format for this section. default format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is a good choice for most applications.

  7. Select Apply . A window will appear that says » Apply changes to [вашему диску]» .

Disk Utility partition in macOS Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, and Catalina

Apple recommends that your system use the Apple File System ( APFS ), in most cases you should not partition the disk. Instead of this create multiple APFS volumes on the same partition using Disk Utility.

  1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive you want to partition from the sidebar.

    When you select a volume that already has data, the pie chart displays a shaded area representing the amount of data on the volume and an unshaded area representing the amount of free space available for another volume.

  2. Select Chapter, and then again select Chapter .

  3. Select plus sign (+).

  4. Enter the section name in field » Name» .

  5. Select a file system format.

  6. Enter a size or drag the resize control to increase or decrease the size of the section.

  7. Select » Apply» > «Section» and then select » Proceed» .

  8. Select show details, to view more information about the process.

  9. After creating a new partition, select Ready .

  10. You will now see the new partition icon in the Disk Utility sidebar and in the Finder sidebar.
