The information in this article applies to Disk Utility on a Mac running OS X Yosemite and El Capitan as well as macOS Sierra High Sierra, Mojave and Catalina .
Use Disk Utility to partition your Mac hard drive
Disk Utility allows you to partition your hard drive into multiple partitions. Each partition can be formatted or left unformatted as free space for future use. The process differs with different iterations of the Disk Utility app in different versions of OS X and macOS.
Before you begin, back up your data in case something goes wrong and delete files and apps that you don’t need to free up as much space as possible.

Go to Applications > Utilities and double click disk utility, to open the application.

Select main hard drive your car on the left panel.

Select tab » Separation » in the top menu next to point «First aid» .

In chapter » Location» select plus sign (+).

Decide what size you want the new partition to be. Choose to split the selected partition into two partitions or create a partition from unallocated disk space. Drag the bar to resize the section, or use field » The size» to enter the size.

Enter a name for your new section.

Use drop-down menu Format, to select the format for this section. default format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is a good choice for most applications.

Select Apply .

Disk Utility will display a confirmation sheet with instructions on how to proceed. Select chapter, to continue.

In a few seconds, your new partition will appear on your drive and be ready to use.
Disk Utility Partition in OS X El Capitan
Disk Utility has been transformed into El Capitan, so even though it functions the same way, some processes look different. For example, Disk Utility in El Capitan uses a pie chart to represent disk partitions.
