As promised, Galaxy S8 owners are getting an update that adds Google Daydream to their phone. This means you can choose between Gear VR and a Daydream View headset to get the VR fix, or maybe even use both if that’s what you like!
Ready to start? Here’s what you need to enable Daydream on your Galaxy S8!
Some of you don’t have to do anything
If your phone is up to date and Google has released a VR update Services for your phone, you may already have Daydream on your phone! Google’s update didn’t say anything, which means the Daydream logo will just appear on your phone. Check your App Drawer or look at the bright blue swirl icon on your desktop. If you have the Daydream app but haven’t installed it before, you’re good to go!
No dreams yet? Check for a system update
Daydream will only run on the latest version of the Galaxy S8 operating system. To check and see what version you have:
- Go to settings
- Click About phone
- Scroll down to build numbers
The build number you are looking for is − NRD90M.G950USQU1AQG4 . If you don’t have this version on your phone, you need to check for available updates. For this:
- Go to settings
- Click System update
- Click Check for system updates.
If you have an update available, install it now. If your Galaxy S8 says «No update needed at this time», you’ll have to wait for the update to be sent to your phone before you can install Daydream. Once you’ve installed the latest update, Daydream should be waiting for you!
Latest update installed but still no Daydream? Here’s what to do!
If you know you’ve confirmed you have the latest build, but Daydream still doesn’t exist for you, there’s one more thing you can try.
- Go to settings
- Click Applications
- Find Google VR Services and click on it
- Click force stop
- Click Home and go to Play store
- Dream Search
- Install Daydream
Pressing Force Stop should restart the app and cause it to restart, after which the app will check for the latest updates from Google. Once you see the Daydream app on Google Play Storeyou should be ready to go!
