Chamberlain’s MyQ technology is great for remotely opening and closing your garage door with your smartphone, but you can also get notifications whenever the garage door opens and closes (as well as getting notifications when it’s been open for an extended amount of time). Here’s how to turn them on.

RELATED: How to set up MyQ to open your garage door from your smartphone

If you haven’t set up MyQ on your smartphone yet, check out our guide on how to set it all up so you can get started quickly. Once the app is set up, it’s time to enable alerts. Here are a few different alerts you can create.

When your garage door opens

Open the MyQ app and press the menu button in the top left corner of the screen (I use the Liftmaster MyQ app. It may look a little different from the Chamberlain MyQ app, but overall it should be very similar).

Select Alerts from the list.

Click on the «+» button in the upper right corner.

Click on «Garage Door» (or whatever you called your garage door when you installed it).

Start by giving the alert a name.

Then click on the toggle switch to the right of Garage Door Open to be notified when your garage door opens. Do the same for Garage Door Closed if you want to be notified when your garage door closes.

Make sure «As soon as this happens» is enabled so you get an alert right when you open the garage door.

Next, click on the toggle switch next to «Push Notifications» or «Email». Push notification will alert you on your phone.

Then click «Save» in the top right corner to save the alert and enable it.

The new alert will appear on the alerts screen, where you can turn it off and on again at any time.

When your garage door was left open for a certain amount of time

If you want to receive an alert immediately after the garage door is opened, as well as another alert when it remains open for a certain period of time, you need to create a second alert on top of the one you just created in the previous section.

For this type of alert, toggle all the same options, except «As soon as this happens.» This will need to be disabled.

This will display the new option «Longer Than». Just select the amount of time your garage door needs to remain open before you get a notification about it, and then click Done.

If you want to receive alerts only during a certain time

If you’re at home, then you probably don’t give a damn about getting garage door notifications — it’s only really useful when you’re at work or on vacation, so you can set specific times and days when you want to be notified.

As in the previous alerts, everything will remain the same, but you just turn off the toggle switch next to «All times and days».

2017-01-10_0024

After that, a new section will appear where you can specify a specific time window, as well as specific days when you want to turn on the alert.

When you’re done, click «Save» in the upper right corner to create the alert. You are all set!
