While SmartThings has its own line of sensors and devices, you can connect them to all sorts of third-party devices, giving you single control from a single app.

There are a small number of SmartThings sensors and devices to connect to your SmartThings Hub, such as motion sensors, water leak sensors, open/close sensors, and even a streaming camera, but SmartThings is not limited to these devices. In fact, you can add many different third party devices to SmartThings and have them interact with your other sensors and devices.

Philips Hue, Belkin WeMo, and even smart thermostats like Ecobee3 are just some of the popular SmartHome devices you can control with SmartThings, and we’ll show you how to add them to your settings with Philips Hue, for example. By adding Philips Hue headlights, you can turn them on when you turn on the SmartThings sensor.

To get started, open the SmartThings app, which will display the Smart Home Monitor screen. Click on the My Home tab at the bottom.

Of course, you can do more than just turn the Hue light on and off from the SmartThings app. In fact, one of the biggest benefits of adding third party devices to your SmartThings setup (like Philips Hue) is that you can do things like turn on the lights when you turn on the SmartThings motion sensor. This is just a quick example, but the more devices you add to your setup, the more you can do with home automation.
