Backing up Windows Phone to Mac is very easy
We have already established that backing up your Windows Phone can prevent any unnecessary headache due to the loss of personal data. There is no guarantee that you will always remember to take your Windows Phone out of your pocket before putting your laundry in the washing machine. We recently looked at how to back up a Windows Phone using a third-party Windows tool, as Microsoft doesn’t offer the functionality mentioned in the Zune.
In this article, we mistakenly believed that Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac does not have a backup feature. Turns out it certainly works (officially too) and has the same functionality as the tool we used in our previous guide, except we’re on a Mac now. It’s strange that Microsoft would provide Apple Mac users with the means to successfully back up their Windows phones without the need for third-party software, but Windows consumers remain in the dark for now.
Apple fans will thank Microsoft for making it so easy.
So how do you back up Windows Phone with Connector for Mac? It’s incredibly straight forward (see image above). Just connect your device and launch Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac. Select «Device Options» and then click «Back Up» in the new window. If you want to restore a previously saved backup, click Restore.
Luckily — through testing — we were able to confirm that SMS conversations are indeed preserved when backed up and subsequently populated by restoring. Other than that, it’s good to see that Microsoft offers official means to securely store user settings, app data, and more. Let’s hope the software giant adds this to the Windows Phone package that will be released for Windows 8.
