There are tons of Alexa skills you can earn for your echo, but now you can create your own basic skills quickly and easily using Alexa Blueprints.

We’ve talked about this briefly before, but at its core, Alexa Blueprints is an IFTTT-esque interface that lets you do things like create custom answers to specific questions, create your own quizzes, write your own adventure stories, and more. Here’s how to get started.

Start by going to the Blueprints home page and make sure you’re logged into your Amazon account. From there, you can start building your own skill. In this tutorial, I’ll create a skill that will give my nanny information about our cats if they forget or have further questions.

Luckily, Blueprints already has a template for this sort of thing. Scroll down a bit and click the «Pet Sitter» button.

Next, click the «Do It Yourself» button.

You will be shown a quick guide on how Blueprints works. Walk through it if you wish and press the «X» button in the upper right corner of the window.

After that, you’ll be given a few text boxes to fill out, such as your pet’s daily schedule, where you can find certain pet-related things in the house, and any special notes the sitter needs to know. All you have to do is fill in the blanks!

When you’re done filling everything in, click the «Next: Experience» button in the top right corner.

On this page, you’ll be customizing the greeting when you first open the Pet Sitter skill, as well as a few other responses that you can customize. When you’re done with this step, click «Next: Name» in the top right corner.

Finally, you’ll name your new skill Alexa and then click the «Next: Create Skill» button.

On the next screen, you will be prompted to create an Amazon developer account, which is required in order to master Alexa skills. This step is simple and it uses your current account information. Just click the «Upgrade Account» button to make it happen.

Give him some time to build a new skill, which can take a few minutes.

Eventually, your skill will be ready to be used on your Echo, but it may take some extra time for the skill to be editable if you need to make any changes to it.

To level up your skill, simply say «Alexa, open the Pet Sitter» (or whatever you named your skill). From there you can ask him questions and he will use your own answers. For example, you can say «what is the morning schedule» and Alexa will read out any information you have set there.

Of course, this is just one example, but there are several templates to choose from. You can do a lot of other fun things like creating an interactive fairy tale for your kids, creating flashcards to help you study or learn a new subject, or even teach Alexa some new jokes.
