So you have your Gear VR and enjoy the games and apps you can access. It’s time for your friends to get excited about virtual reality and share this amazing experience. You may not know how to record your Gear VR gameplay to share online or directly with friends.
Well, we have good news for you. There is a super easy way to record your gameplay and it’s baked right into Gear VR. Unlike recording gameplay on Google Cardboard, you don’t need to download any apps or use anything other than your Gear VR.
How to take a screenshot
Taking a screenshot is an extremely simple process that requires you to go to your options and select a screenshot from the Capture menu. It usually only takes a few minutes, however, some apps and apps don’t allow you to take screenshots. So if you’ve ever tried to take a screen, but the option in the utilities menu is grayed out, here’s why.
- Press and hold the back button to navigate to the Oculus menu.
- Look to the left and select Capture using the touchpad or controller.
- Select Screenshot.
- Wait for the Gear VR to take a screenshot.
When you tell the Gear VR to take a screenshot, it will return to the game or app you had open. You will see a flashing red dot in the upper right corner of the screen for a few seconds before the screenshot is taken. After the screenshot is taken, you will hear the shutter sound and then you can open these screenshots in your photo gallery.
Recording your gameplay
Previously, to record gameplay on the Gear VR, you either needed to download a screen capture app or use screen capture accessories. Fortunately, those days are behind us. Now all you need is your phone, Gear VR and the app you want to record. You don’t need to do anything before downloading Gear VR.
- Press and hold the back button to navigate to the Oculus menu.
- look to the left and select Capture.
- Choose a video
You will select an entry using the touchpad and it will take you back from the menu to whatever application you have launched. When this happens, you will see a small red dot in the upper right corner of the screen. Here’s how you’ll know what the Gear VR is really recording. Play as much as you want to record. To stop recording, press and hold this back button again.
To find your recordings, just go to the Oculus folder on your phone and you can share your experience without any hassle. The great part about the new built-in recording feature is that when you share your recordings, your viewers will see them in 1024 x 1024 instead of stereoscopic. This makes for a much cleaner share than was previously possible through a screen capture app.
