Back in May 2017, Oculus announced that they were playing with Gear VR support for the Chromecast, and gamers rejoiced. Now it would be even easier to play cool group games like «Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes» or show how cool a game or experience is when you only have one headset. However, there was nothing like a timeline for when we should have expected this update; The only news is that the update will be released slowly.
For some people, this update is already out and we’re excited to let you know!
Chromecast support is trying to hide from you
I’ve been waiting with bated breath for this update to hit my phone — especially since I love horror games and my partner likes to laugh at me when he watches my reaction — and while there have been a lot of updates since May, I’ve never noticed that the handy Chromecast button appears when you open the Oculus app. It was at least until late at night when I opened my library from the Oculus app. wham! The Chromecast button appeared and was fully functional.
Once I started casting to my TV, I could navigate the Oculus app without any problems, but the Chromecast button doesn’t appear on every app screen. You need to be in the Library, Events, Friends, or More tabs for the Chromecast button to appear. When it appears, you will notice it in the upper right corner of the screen. As usual, all you need to do is click on this button and then choose which device you want to use. From there, you can go and when you put on your headset, everyone else in the room can see your adventures on TV.
Just remember that the Chromecast icon will only appear if you have a Chromecast connected and connected within range. If you unplug your Chromecast, the icon won’t appear and you won’t be able to cast.
What if I don’t see the Chromecast icon in my Gear VR Library?
Not everyone has received the Oculus software update yet. If you haven’t received the update, the Chromecast icon simply won’t appear. While some users have access to casting, this is part of a slow rollout. This means that the update will happen in stages and not everyone will get access right away.
When it does, you should see an Oculus system software update. While it’s impossible to tell if the update you’ve received is for Chromecast support, all you have to do is open your library. If you have received the correct update, an icon will appear in the upper right corner of the screen.
