AdwCleaner just got better. The latest version of the free Malwarebytes tool can now remove manufacturer-installed malware on Windows PCs. We already loved it for removing potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) like adware and browser hijackers.

We have loved AdwCleaner for a long time, even before Malwarebytes acquired it in 2016. This is a great way to remove toolbars and other adware from your computer. Now, it’s even a great way to remove pre-installed junk that you probably don’t want on a new PC.

We recommend Malwarebytes as one of the best anti-malware solutions for Windows PCs, but this tool is useful even if you already have Malwarebytes installed. It discovers additional things that not everyone will want to remove. AdwCleaner is also completely free for everyone.

To use it, download and run Malwarebytes AdwCleaner for Windows. The tool will run without installation, just click Scan Now.

You will see a list of software that you can remove. To view more information about the software, right-click on it here and select View Threat Definition to open the definition page on the Malwarebytes website.

Malwarebytes AdwCleaner scan

As noted by Bleeping Computer, this feature is new in AdwCleaner 7.4 released on July 24, 2019. Prior to this release, AdwCleaner only targeted adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), not malware.

Finally, if you really want to get rid of malware on a new PC, we recommend the Fresh Start feature in Windows 10 — it’s like reinstalling Windows 10 from scratch, but easier.
