Microsoft’s Surface Pen can add a lot of extra features to your Surface, but this stylus isn’t without its drawbacks. It has been known to stop working from time to time, so here are some of the best solutions to fix your Surface Pen so you can get back to writing, drawing, and multitasking on your Windows 10 computer.
The instructions in this guide are for Windows 10.
Download the latest update for Windows 10
If your Surface Pro Pen isn’t working properly, it might be because you haven’t installed latest windows update on your Surface Pro, Go, Book or laptop . Performing an update downloads the latest patch for the Windows 10 operating system, but also updates and fixes the device drivers used to make peripherals such as the Surface Pen work properly.
-
To check for the latest Windows 10 update and any new drivers, swipe from the right side of the screen to open Support Center .
-
Click All settings .
-
Click » Update & Security» .
-
Press the gray button Check for updates . Your surface will now automatically download all available updates and drivers from Microsoft servers.
Even if your Surface automatically restarts after installing an update, some changes sometimes require a manual restart. To restart your Surface, click the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of the screen, click the power icon, and then click » Reload» .

Check the surface pen battery
All Surface Pens are powered by an AAAA battery and a dead battery can be the reason why your Surface Pen is not working.
To test the battery in your Surface Pen, press and hold the eraser button on the end of the stylus for five to seven seconds. The small LED should turn on. A green light means the battery is still charged, while a red one means it is almost empty and needs to be replaced. No light means the battery is already dead.
To replace the battery, open the Surface Pen by rotating it and then pulling on the end of the eraser. Once the stylus is open, the battery can be replaced with a new one.
There are three Surface Pen models from Microsoft, each with slight differences in button placement and design. However, all Surface Pens work the same way, and every tip on this page works with every model.

If your Surface Pen’s LED lights up but it still doesn’t write when you touch the screen, you may need to pair via Bluetooth .
