After the successful remake of Resident Evil 2, Capcom continued to revive old games and released a remake of Resident Evil 3 in 2020. The game turned out to be shorter, but more dynamic and rich in staged scenes. In technical terms, it does not differ much from the previous part, but the picture has become a little brighter and more saturated. And traditionally we are offered support for DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. Once in a separate review, we analyzed the performance of Resident Evil 2 Remake. Now we decided to take a closer look at the third part, compare AMD and NVIDIA video cards in different modes and, along the way, identify the version of the DirectX API that is optimal for performance.

The game is traditionally based on the exploration of locations with the shooting of resurrecting zombies. As a relentless pursuer, there is a formidable Nemesis, with which many staged action scenes are associated.

Events develop within the framework of limited urban locations with interweaving of small alleys. The night city is replete with details and lights, which makes the visual experience richer, in contrast to the gloomy rooms and dungeons of the second part.

In addition to some stylistic differences, the new game features more beautiful lighting effects. Although, in general, the graphics of Resident Evil 3 are slightly different from Resident Evil 2. In the settings, an identical set of parameters is observed. For better image clarity, we recommend turning off grain, chromatic aberration, and motion blur.

The RE Engine offers support for two APIs — DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. The last game showed the best results in the old DirectX 11. Let’s find out how Resident Evil 3 performs based on the results of testing.

From AMD’s side, the most powerful solution at the moment remains the Radeon VII.

From NVIDA’s side, the most powerful graphics card is the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition. Recall that for the older Turing, the Founders Edition option implies a slight acceleration in Boost frequencies.

All video cards were brought to the standard frequencies for their series. Acceleration was not used. An exception is the Radeon RX 5600 XT, since in our case the ASUS ROG-STRIX-RX5600XT-O6G-GAMING video card is used with increased core and memory frequencies, but this frequency configuration has already become the de facto standard of this series.

For testing, a certain sequence of actions was repeated at the initial stage of the game. The test episode includes a walk through the ruined streets and part of a staged scene.

The graphs show the minimum and average fps measured using MSI Afterburner.

Let’s start with the Full HD 1920×1080 resolution, which remains the default for most gamers.

All AMD and NVIDIA graphics accelerators show a slight drop in performance when switching from DirectX 11 to DirectX 12. The GeForce GTX 780 Ti can be considered an exception, but in the second mode the video adapter starts to frankly “soap”, there is a problem with loading detailed textures. For playing at Ultra settings, 4 GB of VRAM can be considered a hard minimum, despite the fact that in Full HD more than 6 GB can be easily used. The Radeon RX 480/580 confidently overtake the GeForce GTX 1060, yielding to the GeForce GTX 1660 Super. The unexpectedly low results for the Radeon RX 5500 XT with 4 GB are due to the amount of memory and the PCI Express bus cut to 8 lanes. Theoretically, the results of the Radeon RX 5500 XT at 8 GB should be noticeably better. The Radeon RX 5700 is marginally inferior to the GeForce RTX 2060 Super in DirectX 11, but they are on par in DirectX 12.

The general trend with a drop in performance in DirectX 12 remains unchanged, while the minimum fps drops sharply for video cards with 6 GB — Radeon RX 5600 XT and GeForce GTX 1660 Super. For this resolution, the game needs up to 8 GB of video memory. The GeForce RTX 2060 Super performs on par with the GeForce RTX 2070 and both cards outperform the Radeon RX 5700. The GeForce RTX 2070 Super is faster than AMD’s older models. The old flagship GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is slightly inferior to the GeForce RTX 2070 Super.

Let’s complete the comparison with tests of selected older models at a resolution of 3840×2160:

At maximum load, the gap between the Radeon VII and Radeon RX 5700 XT noticeably widens, which showed similar results at lower resolutions. The AMD flagship is slightly ahead of the GeForce RTX 2070 Super. Both competitors show good results at 50 fps, which can be considered acceptable for such a game. A more demanding player will be satisfied with the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, which is 30-36% faster than the GeForce RTX 2070 Super.

conclusions

The optimal API for the Resident Evil 3 remake is DirectX 11. All video cards show better results in it, and video memory requirements are lower. In this mode, Full HD does not need powerful video cards. The old Radeon RX 580 and GeForce GTX 1060 pull out 1080p perfectly at maximum graphics settings. As the resolution increases, the requirements increase. For the 2560×1440 format, the GeForce GTX 1660 Super will be the minimum acceptable solution, the Radeon RX 5600 XT has excellent results. If for some reason you’re playing DirectX 12, only graphics cards with 8 GB of VRAM will provide smooth performance at 1440p. In 4K, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti will provide high performance, but if you do not chase stable 60 frames, weaker models can handle this format.
