The GeForce RTX 3050 video card has become the most affordable model in the Nvidia Ampere line. It offers full support for modern graphics technologies, allowing the use of DLSS scaling and ray tracing. Previously, we got acquainted with the new product using the example of ASUS Strix. Now let’s get acquainted with the MSI Gaming video card and test it in the new games of 2022. At the same time, we will check the capabilities of the budget model in projects with tracing, which were released this year and at the end of last year.

The video card comes in standard MSI Gaming series packaging. Inside there is an additional box where the device itself is fixed. All accessories are packed in a large black envelope.
The package includes various booklets, instructions and a product registration card.
Visually, the video card does not differ from the top models, but it is smaller in size. The total length is 28 cm. The thickness is equal to two slots.
The massive radiator is covered by an intricately designed casing with two fans. The diameter of the fans is 95 mm.
The back side of the video card is covered with a metal plate. There are slits on the side to reduce airflow resistance inside the case.
There is an eight-pin power connector on the side. At the same time, the general design clearly provides a place for two connectors.
An additional stiffening rib stretches along the side face of the board. On the side of the cooler is the MSI logo with a dragon and backlight.
There are four ports for image output — three DisplayPort and one HDMI.
Let’s take a closer look at the design of the cooling system. The GPU, memory and VRM elements are cooled by a single radiator with three heat pipes. All contact surfaces have a smooth polished surface. The radiator is made of a large number of closely spaced plates. This design is blown by a pair of TorX Fan 4.0 fans with double blades of a unique shape.
The backplate takes part in cooling the back side of the board thanks to thermal pads in the hot zones under the GPU and memory chips.
The board is shorter than the cooling system, so the backplate on the side just covers the cooler.
The board is clearly based on the older GeForce RTX 3060 video card, which has undergone some simplifications. This can be seen from unsoldered phases in the power supply circuit.
The graphics processor is powered by five phases, the memory by one phase.
Full marking of processor GA106-150-KA-A1. Eight gigabytes of memory are filled with four Micron chips labeled IVC47 D9ZPM.
With a standard base value of 1552 MHz, the Boost Clock frequency has been increased from 1777 to 1845 MHz. The power is limited to the standard value of 130 W.
In games, GPU frequencies vary in the range of 1960-2002 MHz. During a long-term load with the 3DMark Time Spy stress test, the frequencies were close to 1980 MHz. Fan speed is less than 1400 rpm at a temperature of no more than 62 °C (26 °C indoors).
In the new Dying Light 2 game, the GPU held steady at 1995 MHz, and the heat and fan speeds were even slightly lower.
According to GPU-Z monitoring, the peak temperature of the hottest point of the GPU reached 76 °C.
It was possible to overclock the video card to 150 MHz for the core and up to 15800 MHz for the effective memory frequency.
In the case of increasing the base value of the frequency to 1702 MHz, the peak Boost reached 2160 MHz. In the 3DMark Time Spy stress test, the average GPU frequency was at or slightly above 2110 MHz. To maintain heating at the initial level, the fan speed was manually increased to 1650 rpm.
With the set parameters, the peak temperature of the hottest point of the processor reached 75 °C.
