Every smartphone owner’s worst nightmare is trying to start the phone and find that nothing is happening. Your phone does not turn on. A black screen with no signs of life means disaster.

What are the reasons why your Android phone or tablet might not turn on? Let’s look at some causes and solutions.

1. Charging problems

As is often the case, the most obvious cause is usually the right one.

If you have not previously noticed any signs of a phone malfunction, the problem may be a simple lack of battery. Most often this is due to charging problems.

Check your connections

First, check the obvious points. Are you sure you didn’t forget to charge your phone? Is the charger partially dislodged from the socket? And is the outlet plugged in?

Dirt and dust

Next, make sure there is no dust, dirt, or other debris blocking the USB port on the charging cable or the phone’s charging port.

Remember, relationships are delicate. The best way to remove dirt from ports is to use a can of compressed air.

Troubleshoot your cable

USB charging cables are notorious for malfunctioning. You can test the integrity of your cable by using it with another device and see if it works. If it doesn’t, you can buy an AmazonBasics USB cable.

2. Run a Power Cycle

We all had a frozen phone. The screen is not responding and none of the buttons work. But did you know that the phone can also get stuck in the off state?

If your Android phone won’t turn on, one solution is to turn off the power. For devices with a removable battery, it’s as simple as taking the battery out, waiting a few seconds, and then putting it back in.

If you don’t have a removable battery, press and hold the device’s power button for a few seconds. Depending on the manufacturer, you may need to hold it down for 10-30 seconds.

3. Check your battery

If you are sure that your charging equipment is working and the power cycle hasn’t solved your problems, it’s time to turn your attention to your phone’s battery.

Most phone and tablet batteries begin to degrade quickly after a few years of use. Eventually they will completely die. Other types of damage can also irreparably affect the battery. Liquids, drops on hard surfaces and extreme temperatures can render the battery useless.

Make sure the battery is getting power

After connecting your phone or tablet to the charger, wait one minute to see if the battery icon appears on your screen.

If so, your battery is fine and you can move on to the next steps. Alternatively, you may see a small red (or other color) indicator. If you do this, it means that your battery does not have enough power to turn on or display any content on the screen. Wait 30 minutes, then try again.

Don’t see the battery icon or indicator? This may mean that your battery is dead and needs to be replaced.

If your phone has a removable battery, you can get a new one on Amazon for a reasonable price. For phones without removable batteries, you will need to either disassemble the phone and replace the battery yourself, or take it to a specialized store.

Please be aware that if you attempt to replace the battery yourself, you may void your device’s warranty. If you want to test your android battery health, battery works follow our guide.
