AMD has introduced a new model in the line of video cards based on the RDNA2 architecture — the Radeon RX 6600, which is a stripped-down version of the Radeon RX 6600 XT. Let’s get acquainted with the new product using the example of ASUS DUAL-RX6600-8G, check its overclocking potential, compare it with the Radeon RX 6600 XT and GeForce RTX 3060.


The Radeon RX 6600 is a full member of the new family of AMD graphics solutions, supporting all the benefits of the RDNA2 architecture. The graphics chip has special hardware blocks for accelerated tracing, supports AMD Smart Access Memory technology and AMD FidelityFX software technologies.

The Radeon RX 6600 XT and Radeon RX 6600 are based on the Navi 23 graphics processor. In the younger version, it is partially cut down in terms of computing units and operates at lower frequencies. Active 28 Compute Units with 1792 stream processors, 112 texture units and 28 trace acceleration units. The large L3 infinity Cache reaches up to 32MB.


The base frequency of the GPU is set at 1626 MHz, Game Clock — 2044 MHz, Boost Clock — 2491 MHz. The memory bus is 128 bits, eight gigabytes of GDDR6 are installed. The effective memory frequency is equivalent to 14000 MHz (for the RX 6600 XT it is 16000 MHz). Such simplifications made it possible to reduce the TDP of the video card to a modest 132 watts.

If the Radeon RX 6600 XT was positioned as a higher performance replacement for the Radeon RX 5700 XT, then the Radeon RX 6600 should outperform the Radeon RX 5700 at lower power consumption and hardware support for ray tracing. The advantages of the novelty also include an improved video processing unit Radeon Media Engine, which provides hardware-accelerated decoding and encoding of high-resolution video. It provides AV1 playback up to 4K@120Hz and 8K@30Hz, H.265 up to 8K@24, H.264 up to 4K@180 and VP9 up to 8K@24 and 4K@90. Video encoding is supported in H.264 4K@90 and H.264 4K@60, H.264 8K@24.

AMD is actively developing the AMD FidelityFX initiative to help developers bring their technology into games. These include AMD FidelityFX CAS sharpening, optimized Variable Rate Shading, and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) scaling. The latter technology helps to increase performance at high resolutions with heavy settings, for example, in Far Cry 6 with tracing (our review). The list of games that support AMD FSR is approaching 30, soon Call of Duty: Vanguard, Baldur’s Gate 3 and other projects will join them.
