Teens use Instagram more than any other age group. Photocentric social network thrives on feeding every inner narcissist. If your child is part of generations selfie and uses this social media platform, you must pay close attention to his or her online activities. Parental controls on Instagram are weak, but you can do so by using various settings and smart online security tactics.

Here are five simple precautions to help keep your children safe.

Remove unknowns from their followers list

Any Instagram user can view the photos and videos your child posts, unless your child is using the personal account mode and access restrictions of this tool. This is why you should review your child’s follower list periodically and ask them questions such as:

  • Who is this person following you?
  • How do you know them?

If the answers are «I don’t know them» and «I’ve never met them», you should remove them from the list. Your kids may claim that their follower stats are a measure of popularity and they don’t want to downvote them. Explain to them that unknown followers seeing their private photos is not an acceptable risk.

Go through this list with them and remove people who are out of touch or out of age.

Enable «Personal account» mode

Mode private account Instagram blocks the account, so only people you approve as followers can follow you. So, instead of the whole world having access to everything your child posts, your kids can choose who they want to follow them. Require them to use this mode. This cuts down on random followers that seem to build up over time.

Get their photos from an Instagram card

Instagram has a map that can show you where your child’s photos were taken. This is done based on the ability to take photos with geotagging on their smartphone. Stalkers love geotags so you should instruct your children to remove their geotags.

Prevent future location sharing

To disable Instagram’s ability to tag future photos, you must disable its access to your child’s phone’s location services. For iOS devices, open the Settings app, select » Confidentiality» > » Location Services » > » Instagram, and then select » Never» in section » Allow location access «.

For Android phones on base, check Help site Instagram for getting information about invalidating geotags.

Prevent them from posting personal information on their Instagram profile

Check the information on their Instagram profile. The social network allows you to list personal information such as your real name and phone number. Make sure there is nothing on their profile that would allow anyone to contact them directly or get their location.
