If you’re like me and turn on your porch lights after sunset, it’s sometimes easy to forget to do it every night. However, if you have a Wink hub and a smart light bulb or smart switch, you can turn your porch lights on and off automatically according to a sunset and sunrise schedule.

RELATED: How to Schedule Your Lights with Wink

We have covered how to do something similar in the past, but this involves setting a specific time for the lights to turn on and off. And since the sun sets and rises at different times of the year (mainly due to daylight saving time), setting a specific schedule is not the best method when it comes to street lighting. Instead, it’s better to automatically control lighting based on when the sun rises and sets.

The Wink app has a new Moonlight feature that automatically turns on all lights when it gets dark outside. It is mainly intended for users who want to come home to a well-lit home at night, instead of fiddling with light switches when entering. However, Moonlight is also great for automatically turning on the lights on my porch when it gets dark, so I’ll use that as an example in this guide.

To get started, open the Wink app on your smartphone and tap the menu button in the top left corner of the screen.

Next, tap the «Light + Power» option.

Select the «Services» tab at the top.

Click «Settings» in the «Moonlight» field.

You will get a brief idea of what moonlight is. Swipe left to continue through the intro.

When you reach the end, click the «Get Started» button at the bottom.

Then give the Wink app permission to use your location, as it will need this information to know when the sun sets and rises. When it’s done, click the «Ok, Got It» button.

If the app already has your location in the file, select it with the toggle on the right and click Next at the bottom. Otherwise, click «New Location» to enter your address.

On the next screen, choose which lights you want to control and then click the Next button. In this case, we select the entrance lighting that we have configured.

Next, choose when you want your lights to turn on and off automatically. Here we want the porch light to turn on at sunset and turn off at sunrise, but you can also turn off the light at midnight or 2:00 AM. Click «Next» after selection.

You have successfully set up Moonlight. Go ahead and officially enable it by clicking the «Enable Now» button.

Moonlight is active now. In the future, you can return to this section in the application and make any changes, as well as temporarily disable this feature if necessary.
