Are my files protected in the cloud?

Moving your desktop or other folders to the cloud is more convenient than transferring files from a USB drive . However, there are some effects for security, which should be considered. Whenever you post files online, they are potentially available to others. Law enforcement may, for example, use a warrant to request access to your files, and you may not know when this will happen.

A more common difficulty is when hackers guess or steal your account password. If this happens, the bad guys have access to your OneDrive files. It’s not a big deal if all you have saved in the cloud is old poetry from high school. However, unauthorized access to work documents or personal information files can be devastating.

There are a number of security measures you can take to reduce this risk. One of them is the inclusion two-factor authentication for your cloud storage account. An easier way is to not put anything in the cloud that contains information that you don’t want others to see. For home users, this usually means storing items such as spreadsheets, bills, and mortgages on a hard drive instead of in the cloud, with the associated risk of losing access if the hard drive fails.

In mid to late 2019, Microsoft released the Personal Vault feature for OneDrive, which was rolled out to users around the world during 2019, providing additional security through encryption and forced multi-factor authentication. For mission-critical files that are relatively infrequently accessed, Personal Vault offers a good balance of protection and ease of access.
