Screen Sharing is a useful feature built into the Mac. Setting up your Mac to share your screen, files, and services with others on the network is easy. This feature allows you to show other users what’s on your screen, as well as open, move, and close files, windows, and applications. remotely or even restart your Mac . Mac screen sharing is also a great way to access documents and apps on your Mac when you’re out and about.

Here’s how to set up screen sharing on your Mac and access another Mac’s desktop. There are several ways to do this.

The information in this article applies to Mac computers with newer versions of OS X, including Sierra, Mojave, and Catalina .

Setting up Mac Screen Sharing

The first step is to enable screen sharing on your Mac and the Mac you want to access.

  1. On your Mac, go to menu Apple and select » System Settings» .

  2. Select General access .

  3. Install checkbox » Shared Screen» .

  4. Specify who can share your screen. Select » All users» for any user on your network, or select » Only these users to limit number of users which can give access to your screen.

  6. Optionally select » Computer Settings» and check the box » Anyone can request permission to control the screen» . This way, other users won’t need to enter a username and password when they want to access your screen.

  7. When you’re done with your preferences, close dialog window » General access «. You are ready to start a screen sharing session with another user.

Start a Screen Sharing Session

There are several ways to start a screen sharing session. Use the Finder and the IP address of another Mac, use the Finder and the name of the other Mac, use the Finder sidebar, or start a session from Messages.

Start Screen Sharing Using Another Mac’s Address

  1. From the Apple menu, go to » System Settings» .

  2. Select » Sharing» > «Screen Sharing» then write down the Mac address. The format will look like vnc:// [ IP — адрес ] or VNC:// [ Name.Domain ].

  3. AT Finder select » Go» > «Connect to Server» .

  4. Enter the address of the Mac you want to share, then select Connect .

  5. When prompted, enter Username and password then select » To come in» .

  6. If both computers are signed in with the same Apple ID, the screen sharing session will start immediately. A new window will open with the desktop of the target Mac.

    If not, you’ll be prompted to enter the other user’s username and password, or you can request permission to share your screen if your computer allows it.

  7. Now you can interact with the remote desktop as if you were sitting in front of this Mac. Take control, launch applications, manipulate files and more.

Start screen sharing using another Mac’s name

  1. From the Apple menu, select » System Settings» .

  2. Select » Sharing» > «Screen Sharing» and then write down the name of the other Mac. It could be something like «Joe Macbook» or «iMac 7».

  3. Select icon Finder in Dock, to open a Finder window.

  4. In chapter » Location » sidebar select « Net» .

  5. Double-click the Mac you want to share and select » Send screen» .

    If in the section » Locations » on the sidebar no items hover over the word » Locations» and select » Show» .

  6. When prompted, enter Username and password then select » To come in» .

  7. If both computers are signed in with the same Apple ID, the screen sharing session will start immediately. A new window will open with the desktop of the target Mac.

  8. Now you can interact with the remote desktop as if you were sitting in front of this Mac. Take control, launch applications, manipulate files and more.

Start a Screen Sharing Session Using the Finder Sidebar

Usage Sidebar Finder is a good way if you don’t know the IP address or name of the shared Mac.

  1. Go to Finder > File > New Finder Window .

  2. On the sidebar Finder find chapter shared . This should display a list of network shares, including the target Mac.

  3. Select target Mac from general list.

  4. On the main panel of the window Finder click button » Share Screen» .

  5. Depending on your screen sharing settings, a dialog box may appear asking for a username and password for the shared Mac. Enter the required information and select » Connect» .

  6. The remote Mac desktop will open in a separate window on your Mac, and you can use it as if it were right in front of you.

Start a Screen Sharing Session from Messages

Using the Messages app on your Mac is another easy way to start a screen sharing session.

  1. open Appendix Messages on your Mac.

  2. Start a conversation with your friend or select a conversation that is already in progress.

  3. In the selected conversation, select Details in the upper right corner of the conversation window.

  4. In the pop-up window that opens, click button » Shared Screen» . It looks like two small displays.

  5. A second pop-up menu will appear. Select To invite share your screen or ask to share the screen .

  6. If the friend accepts the request, screen sharing begins.

The friend who first views your Mac’s desktop can only view and not interact with your Mac. However, they may ask you to be able to control your Mac by selecting option » Control» in window » Shared Screen» .
