Smart plugs are everywhere these days, but if you want one that comes with a physical remote control, the Lutron Caseta Plug-In Lamp Dimmer is a smart plug worth considering. Here’s how to do it.

Lutron is the king of dimmer switches — they actually invented them. And the Caseta range is great for those who want a little smart in their lights. The company’s Plug-In Lamp Dimmers are smart plug-esque devices that have almost the same features as Caseta’s dimmer switches, including the included Pico remote control.

Step One: Set Up the Dimmer Plugin

To get started, simply plug the dimmer into a free outlet. Ideally, you should plug it into the bottom outlet, as plugging into the top outlet will take up the entire outlet.

Then connect up to two lamps to the dimmer. There are sockets on both sides of the device. Make sure the bulbs you use in your lamps are dimmable (usually this will point directly at the bulb and the box it’s in).

Turn your lamps on their switches if they are not already on.

At this point, the plug-in dimmer is fully configured and you can control your lights using the buttons on the device itself. You can turn the lamps on and off, and dim or brighten them to any desired level. However, lighting control with a dimmer isn’t ideal, so there’s a Pico remote to make things easier.

Step Two: Set Up the Pico Remote

Start by pressing and holding the off button on the dimmer for about five seconds until the small LED starts blinking green.

Then press and hold the «Off» button On the remote control for about five seconds until the lamp connected to the dimmer flashes three times (the LED on the remote control flashes briefly, then turns off, then flashes again when the remote has been paired).

The remote control and the plug-in are now connected to each other. At this point, you are all set and can use the remote to control your lights. But you can also customize the shortcut, which we’ll explain in the next step.

Step Three: Customize the Dimming Shortcut (Optional)

If you find that you usually turn the brightness down to the same level, you can use the round button on the Pico remote to set a dimming shortcut of sorts.

Start by setting your light to the brightness level you want for the label. Then press and hold the round button on the remote control until the LED on the plug-in’s dimmer flashes twice.

After that, when you press the round button, your lights will dim to the level you set.
