If you are a Mac user, you can use macOS Mail to send and receive Gmail messages. To use Gmail in macOS Mail you need to enable access by IMAP or POP . After completing these steps, you can add Gmail using any protocol.

Instructions in this article apply to macOS High Sierra (10.13) and later.

Setting up for IMAP access

The first option for using Gmail in macOS mail is IMAP. Below are instructions for configuring Gmail with IMAP protocol .

  1. To Mail select » File» > » Add account» . (Or, if you’ve never set up an account, all you have to do is open mail.)

Setting for POP access

If you prefer to use the POP protocol with Gmail and macOS Mail, the setup is slightly different. As with IMAP, you must first allow access by protocol POP in Gmail . Google may block the activity due to an «unsafe» application. You will need to sign in to Gmail and unblock less secure apps . Then do the following:

  1. To Mail select » File» > » Add account» . (Or, if you’ve never set up an account, all you have to do is open mail.)
