Recently, a computer version of the console hit God of War, previously available only on Sony PlayStation devices, was released. The game has improved graphics and support for new technologies. Now you can enjoy fierce battles in high resolution with high frame rates. The main condition for a comfortable gaming process is powerful modern video cards of the older price segment. We will talk about their potential in God of War in this review. We compare older Nvidia and AMD models in 2560×1440 and 3840×2160 formats. Now let’s get acquainted with the new version of GeForce RTX 3080 12GB made by MSI.

God of War

The game uses its own engine and works under the DirectX 11 API. The picture pleases with good detail. Faint distant foregrounds are skillfully hidden by limited depth of field and other blurring effects. Emphasis on characters, excellent art design and cinematography allow you to achieve the full effect of immersion in a virtual adventure.

God of WarGod of War

God of War supports the latest Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR upscaling technologies, which allow for increased high-resolution performance. Nvidia Reflex technology reduces system lag and accelerates the reaction to player commands.

Let’s check what the top MSI Suprim video cards and several reference models are capable of.

Test participants

The following video cards were involved in the testing:

  • MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X 12G LHR;
  • MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X 10G;
  • GeForce RTX 3080 10GB;
  • GeForce RTX 3070 8GB;
  • Radeon RX 6800 XT 16 ГБ;
  • Radeon RX 6800 16GB.

MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X 12G are representatives of the new GeForce RTX 3080 line. This version received an increased amount of memory, a 384-bit bus and more active GPU computing units. Factory overclocking and high-quality cooling provide MSI Suprim with additional acceleration. The video card is aimed at gamers and has a hardware performance limiter in Ethereum mining.

God of War

A detailed analysis of the features of the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X 12G will be in a separate review. While we talk about the potential of the novelty in God of War at high resolution, let’s compare the results in different DLSS modes.

The second important participant is the MSI RTX GeForce 3080 Suprim X 10G. Boost frequencies of the old and new Suprim are at the same level. This will allow you to evaluate the difference between the two GeForce RTX 3080 variants under the same conditions.

God of War

We also tested the GeForce RTX 3080 10GB with recommended frequencies. Other participants are represented by reference models with standard frequency characteristics.

Full technical specifications are given in the table.

Test results

Consider the results in 2560×1440 format.

God of War

All participants show excellent performance. Top MSI Suprim solutions are capable of providing 100 or more frames. At the same time, even the simplest version of the GeForce RTX 3080 is faster than the Radeon RX 6800 XT, but the GeForce RTX 3070 is slightly inferior to the Radeon RX 6800. The video memory download is less than 7 gigabytes.

Let’s go to the 4K format.

God of War

Here, GeForce RTX 3080 is a necessity if you want to play with performance of 60 frames and more. The advantage of the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X 12G over the simple version of the GeForce RTX 3080 is 9%. In the test scene, the game downloads about 8 gigabytes, in other scenes it can use more than 9 gigabytes.

Comparison of AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS

Thanks to the scaling technologies, you can increase the performance in heavy modes. Nvidia DLSS 2.0 uses AI technology to build the frame using temporal sampling and motion vector prediction. AMD FSR is conventional scaling with additional sharpening filters.

God of War clearly shows the input resolution when choosing different DLSS or FSR quality. At 4K, the highest quality FSR Ultra Quality mode uses 2954×1662 pixels, FSR Ultra uses 2560×1440. DLSS Quality mode assumes an input resolution of 2560×1440.

God of War

Let’s focus on quality modes. Let’s look at the visual differences at different scales, and then compare the performance in these modes. Below are three screenshots, first 4K without scaling, then 4K with DLSS Quality and 4K with FSR Ultra Quality.

In both examples, the difference in picture quality is minimal. Changes are noticeable in the definition of thin branches of trees, grass and other small elements.

For clarity, below is a comparison of the same fragment.

God of War

Kratos looks equally good in all three modes, right down to the stitching and texture of the leather elements of the clothing.

Next, let’s look at the fragment with distant trees with a two-fold increase.

God of War

DLSS technology provides the sharpest branch contours, while fragmentation is noticeable with FSR. Weak visibility of a distant tree is due to the dynamic effect of fog.

Now let’s look at the performance of video cards in different modes. FSR scaling is available on any graphics card, DLSS only on GeForce RTX with Tensor GPU units.

God of War

God of War

With DLSS and FSR, it is possible to reach 60 frames even on the GeForce RTX 3070 and Radeon RX 6800. In the case of the GeForce RTX 3080, the performance reaches 80-90 frames.

On a separate graph, the results in full 4K and two DLSS variants for the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X 12G.

God of War

The Quality mode provides an acceleration of about 20% compared to the initial indicators. In Balanced mode — acceleration up to 30%.

If you want to enjoy the beautiful northern landscapes and fierce battles of God of War in 4K, the best solution is the GeForce RTX 3080 series video cards. Maximum comfort will be provided by the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X 12G, which is equipped with powerful cooling and works with factory acceleration. This graphics card is 8-9% faster than the older version GeForce RTX 3080 with less memory. If we compare identical frequency versions of MSI Suprim, the difference between GeForce RTX 3080 with different amount of video buffer is 4%. And since 10 GB is quite enough for the game for the maximum resolution, this difference is entirely due to the different configuration of the GPU and the memory bus.

GeForce RTX 3080 video cards confidently bypass Radeon RX 6800 XT. However, the younger Radeon RX 6800 slightly wins over the GeForce RTX 3070. The latter shows excellent results in the 2560×1440 format, but weak for 4K. In combination with scaling, they are able to provide a comfortable frame rate. AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS quality modes show little difference from the original 4K format. It is worth noting some advantages of DLSS in the representation of small elements. Therefore, you can safely use high-quality DLSS modes with high resolution on GeForce RTX video cards. The advantage of AMD FSR is the availability of the technology for all more or less current video cards, including previous generations. When choosing fast scaling profiles or with reduced resolution, the loss of image quality will be more noticeable, but this compromise can be justified for video cards of the lower price segment.
