Recently, Ubisoft released a new part of Far Cry, offering players a break from the boring everyday life in the southern tropical country of Yara, where a big conflict is unfolding between the local dictator and the rebels. This is a massive adventure based on old game mechanics with some new nuances. The game did not make a visual revolution, but the developers transferred the Dunia engine to the DirectX 12 API and introduced support for ray tracing. With a small list of available graphics cards, we decided to conduct a general performance analysis, assessing the impact of tracing and HD textures. Based on the results, conclusions will also be drawn about the optimal video cards for different resolutions.

The main visual difference between Far Cry 6 and the old parts is the juicy color scheme. The bright picture brings back memories of Far Cry 3. There is a feeling that the grass has been slightly improved, the effect of volumetric light (fog) has been improved. There were beautiful weather effects associated with rain.

The difference in reflections on the surface of the puddle is immediately visible. Also, a more correct mesh shadow appears and the water has a shade close to the environment, which gives the picture a natural look. We will talk in more detail about the effect of tracing on the image in a separate review.

The latest games in the series received a free set of HD textures upon release. Far Cry 6 from the start offers to install a package of improved textures. That’s just the effect of its inclusion may be absent. After experimenting on the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti at 2560×1440 and 3840×2160 resolutions, we noticed an ambiguous effect from the inclusion of this package, when the clarity of the textures of weapons and some objects decreased, and the consumption of video memory increased. And even with simple textures, the game loads 8 GB at 1440p. It seems that in HD mode the engine does not load full textures. Unfortunately, this is a typical problem with modern DirectX 12 games.

Testing was done with a built-in gaming test (six repetitions) using MSI Afterburner for more precise data control.

First of all, it is worth saying about unstable performance and large parsing by minimum fps and 1% low. In some cases, we used rough rounding of these data. And after future updates in the following reviews, the results may be different.

Let’s compare the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3060 OC and Gigabyte Radeon RX 6600 XT Gaming OC Pro video cards at 1920×1080.

The Radeon RX 6600 XT confidently outperforms its rival in both modes. Enabling HD textures reduces the minimum performance and drops 1% low for the GeForce RTX 3060. Even in normal mode, the game loads more than 5 GB of video memory, with HD textures it is 7 GB or more.

Next, let’s see how video cards handle tracing-based effects (shadows and reflections are enabled).

The average performance of the GeForce RTX 3060 is higher, but the Radeon RX 6600 XT wins at the minimum.

The usual advantage of the Radeon RX 6600 XT over the GeForce RTX 3060. The slight difference between Radeon and older GeForces is noteworthy. The latter show identical results and incomplete GPU loading, clearly hinting at insufficient processor power. Even at 1440p high resolution, the weak link is the Intel Core i9-9900K.

The inclusion of HD textures has minimal effect on older models, only the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti shows a clear 1% low reduction. But, as we wrote earlier, you will not see real benefits from enabling HD textures on video cards with 8 GB. On the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, the game loaded over 9 GB of memory.

HD textures do not affect the performance of graphics cards with 8 GB, but reduce the results of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with a memory load of about 10 GB. Tracing at a resolution of 3840×2160 significantly affects performance and causes game freezes, so we additionally enabled AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution scaling in Ultra Quality mode. With this combination of settings, our GeForce RTX trio confidently delivers over 60 frames with excellent minimum performance.

For clarity, let’s show on one graph the performance of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti in 4K at different settings.

Let’s summarize. Nice visual design allows Far Cry 6 to win in terms of image quality relative to previous parts, but the main technical advantage was support for ray tracing. This allows the game to show more accurate reflections and shadows. It’s nice that the performance drop with tracing is not as catastrophic as in other games. If you have a powerful graphics card, it is no doubt better to play with tracing.

The game has completely switched to the DirectX 12 API, which will seriously affect the performance of older video cards. In modern realities, when many users have forgotten about the upgrade, this is a drawback. If in Far Cry 5 you could comfortably play in Full HD resolution on the GeForce GTX 1060 and Radeon RX 580 at Ultra-quality, now you have to lower the settings. If we talk about the new generation, then the younger models in the face of the GeForce GTX 3060 and Radeon RX 6600 XT can easily handle Full HD and allow you to play 1440p without tracing. Although the use of AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution scaling will allow you to use the «rays» even in high resolution.

Rayless 4K is playable on the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, GeForce RTX 3070, GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, and comparable AMD graphics cards. Tracing in full 4K this trio will not pull out, but AMD FSR will help raise the results to a comfortable level. However, with 8 GB of VRAM, you will experience instability with game freezes and possible texture issues. Therefore, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is in a winning position here, although the potential of the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is slightly higher.

The game needs a lot of VRAM, especially with HD textures enabled. At the same time, HD textures do not work correctly, and on models with 8 GB there will not be an improvement, but a deterioration in some textures. We do not recommend enabling HD textures if your graphics card has less than 11 GB of VRAM. And all this hints at the relevance of 16 GB in the older Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT. If possible, we will definitely compare the older models of AMD and NVIDIA in the game under consideration.
