When you buy Samsung Smart TV its setup and use is not the end of the story. You need to update your TV regularly with periodic updates software and/or embedded software . Although technically there is a difference between software and firmware Samsung often uses the term «Software Update» to include both. Here is how these updates can be done.

Beginning

To update your Samsung Smart TV, you need to access the update options that are available.

To do this:

  • Select Settings represented as a gear icon and usually located in the lower left corner of the home screen.
  • Select Support represented as a question mark icon located in the lower left corner of the settings screen.
  • Select Software update .

Set your Samsung Smart TV to update automatically

You can automatically update your Samsung Smart TV so you don’t have to waste time doing it yourself.

To enable this feature, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your TV is connected to the Internet.

  2. Go to settings .

  3. Select Support .

  4. Select Software update .

  5. Select Auto update .

When you turn on the TV and detect a new update, it downloads and installs it before you can watch anything or use other TV features. This may take several minutes, depending on the nature of the update.

If you have selected the Automatic Update option and an update becomes available while watching TV, the update will be downloaded and installed in the background and then installed the next time the TV is turned on.

Update your TV manually via the Internet

If your TV is connected to the Internet but you prefer to activate updates firmware / software manually, you can do that.

Here are the steps:

  1. Go to settings .

  2. Select Support .

  3. Select Software update .

  4. Select Update now . If an update is available, the download and installation process will be initiated in the same way as described in the Auto Update section above.

  5. If updates are not available, select OK, to exit the settings menu and switch to using the TV.

Update TV manually via USB

If your TV is not connected to the Internet or you prefer to install software/firmware updates locally, you have the option to do so via USB.

To use this option, you must first download the update on your PC or laptop:

  1. Go to website Samsung online support .

  2. Enter your TV model number in the field search support . This should take you to the support page for your TV model.

    • Your model number should look like this: UN40KU6300FXZA.
  3. Select information page .

  4. Select » Downloads» or scroll down before » Manuals & Downloads» .

  5. Select Download or view more .

  6. Download software/firmware updates to your PC or laptop.

    The firmware file downloaded from the site is a compressed file with the extension .EXE .

  7. Connect USB flash drive to your PC or laptop.

  8. Run the downloaded file. When asked where you want to unzip the contents of the file, select a USB drive with sufficient capacity.

  9. 9. After downloading and unzipping is completed on the USB flash drive, connect it to USB TV port.

    If you have more than one USB port, make sure no other USB devices are connected to any of the USB ports.

  10. 10. Use the TV remote control to select icon » Home» or » Smart Hub» then icon » Settings» on a TV screen that looks like a gear.

  11. 11. Scroll down and select Support .

  12. 12. Select software update, and then Update now .

  13. Select option USB . On the screen you will see the message “Scanning USB. This may take more than 1 minute.»

  14. Follow the instructions below to start the update process.

  15. When the process is completed, the Samsung Smart TV will automatically turn off and then turn on again, indicating that the software update has been installed correctly and is ready to use.

  16. To further confirm that you have updated the software, you can go to » Settings» choose » Software update» and then » Update Now» . The latest update will appear on the TV screen.

Do not turn off the TV during the update process. The TV must remain on until the update is complete. The TV will turn off and on automatically after the software update is completed, which will reboot the TV. Depending on the nature of the update, audio and video settings may be dropped to factory default settings after software update.

How to update apps on Samsung Smart TV

To continue using samsung apps, installed on your Smart TV, you need to make sure you have the latest versions installed. This is separate from system software update or TV firmware update as each application has its own structure. The easiest way to keep your apps up to date is to have the TV do it automatically.

To set this up, follow these steps:

  1. Click the button Smart Hub / Home on the Samsung TV remote.

  2. From the Smart Hub main menu, select Applications .

  3. Select My apps .

  4. Select » Options» and make sure » Auto update» set to » On .».

    If you don’t want apps to update automatically, set Auto Update to Off.

  5. If you use the option manually, when you select an individual application, you will be notified that an update is available. Follow any further messages or prompts to start the upgrade process.

  6. When the update is complete, the app will open for you to use.

If you have an older Samsung Smart TV, such as one released up to 2016 model year there may be some options for the steps required to update applications:

2015 Models : press the button Menu» on the remote control, select » Smart Hub» > » Automatic update of apps and games > » On» .

2014 models : press button Menu on the remote control. Select smart hub > Application settings > Auto update .

2013 models : press the button smart hub on the remote control, select » Applications» > » Additional Applications» and follow additional instructions.
