If you’re away from home and your HVAC system suddenly breaks down, you probably want to fix it as soon as possible. Here’s how to get instant alerts from your Ecobee thermostat when there are potential heating and cooling issues.

You can get similar notifications from Nest, but it can’t natively, so you’ll need to get some help from IFTTT and create a couple of recipes to make things work. However, the Ecobee range of thermostats has a built-in feature that sends you alerts to your phone (and to your email address) if the room temperature in your home ever reaches a certain level, indicating the likelihood that something might be wrong. wrong with your HVAC system.

To get started, open the Ecobee app on your smartphone and when you are on the main screen displaying the thermostat user interface, tap on the menu button in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Select Reminders & Alerts.

Click on «Settings».

The two alerts you will be configuring are «Low Temperature Alert» and «High Temperature Alert». You will use the first one in winter and the second one in summer.

We’ll set up a low temperature alert first, so select it and you’ll see two options. Click the arrow next to «Get notified» and select «Enable» if it’s not already.

Then click on the arrow next to «Low temperature limit» to set the threshold. Press and hold your finger on the right wheel and drag it up or down to set the temperature. Then click «Save» in the lower right corner.

After that, click on the back arrow in the upper left corner.

Then click «High Temperature Warning».

Do the same as before, only this time you will set the temperature to high for summer use.

With both of these alerts enabled, you’ll get a notification on your phone whenever the temperature drops below that defined point in winter and rises above your high temperature limit in summer. When you receive this notification, it’s likely that something has gone wrong with either your thermostat or your HVAC system, which you can get someone on the sound to look at as quickly as possible.
