The DualShock 4’s lightbar is a nifty thing. It works with many games to mimic what’s happening on screen — for example, in The Last of Us it will change colors as your health deteriorates and blush as you die. It’s petty, but it’s cool. The downside is that it also drains the battery, causing the controller to die much faster than most of us would like. Fortunately, you can darken it.

To get started, enter the PlayStation settings menu. This is indicated by a small suitcase icon.

The last option in this menu is DUALSHOCK 4 Lightbar Brightness. This is what you are looking for.

The default setting is Bright, but two more options are available: Medium and Dim.

To get the most out of your battery, choose «Dim», which will lower the brightness levels a lot, but it doesn’t really take away functionality. If you like the default brightness and just want to squeeze out a little more before throwing the controller into the charger, try Medium — it’s a good balance between brightness and battery life.

To confirm your choice, simply press X.

That’s really all there is to it. This will apply to the currently connected controller, but is also profile dependent. So if you like the brightness control but someone else who shares your PS4 wants all the brightness all the time, no problem.
